Jaw Clicking Isn’t Normal: What Happens When You Ignore TMD Symptoms

Doctor checking patient's toothache in office

That faint pop when you open your mouth wide. The dull ache in your jaw after a long day. The headaches that seem to show up out of nowhere. These are the kinds of symptoms people chalk up to stress, poor sleep, or just getting older. But when they keep coming back, they may be telling you something important about the health of your temporomandibular joint. Temporomandibular disorder, or TMD, is a condition affecting the jaw joint and the muscles that control its movement, and it has a way of starting quietly before it becomes something that cannot be ignored.

The problem is that most people wait. They try over-the-counter pain relievers, adjust their diet, and hope things improve on their own. And sometimes, short-term relief makes it easy to believe the issue has resolved. At Drs. Chin & Pharar Dentistry, we see patients regularly who have been managing symptoms for months or even years before seeking care. What they often find is that what started as a minor clicking sound has progressed into something requiring far more involved treatment than it would have earlier on.

What TMD Actually Involves

TMD is not a single condition. It is a group of disorders affecting the jaw joint, the surrounding muscles, and the connective tissue that holds everything together. The temporomandibular joint is one of the most complex joints in the body, responsible for every bite, yawn, and word you speak. When it is functioning properly, you probably do not think about it at all. When it is not, the symptoms can radiate well beyond the jaw.

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, TMD affects between 5% and 12% of the population, making it one of the more widespread sources of chronic facial pain. The disorder is also at least twice as prevalent in women as in men. Despite how common it is, many cases go undiagnosed for extended periods because the symptoms mimic other conditions, including tension headaches, ear infections, and sinus issues.

The Symptoms People Tend to Dismiss

Jaw Clicking and Popping

A clicking or popping sound in the jaw joint is often the first sign that something is off. Many people assume this is harmless, and in some cases, it may be. But when clicking is accompanied by pain, stiffness, or difficulty opening the mouth fully, it signals that the disc inside the joint may be shifting out of position. Left unaddressed, disc displacement can progress to locking of the jaw, which requires more aggressive intervention to correct.

Headaches and Facial Pain

One of the most frequently missed connections in dentistry is between jaw dysfunction and chronic headaches. The muscles that control jaw movement are directly connected to the muscles of the head and neck. When the jaw joint is under strain, those muscles compensate, leading to tension that builds across the temples, behind the eyes, and down into the neck and shoulders. Patients who have been managing what they believe are chronic tension headaches may find that a nightguard or other TMD-focused treatment significantly reduces their headache frequency.

Ear Pain and a Change in Bite

Because the temporomandibular joint sits just in front of the ear canal, inflammation in that area can create a sensation of ear pain, pressure, or even muffled hearing. Patients sometimes pursue ENT consultations before a dental connection is made. A change in how your upper and lower teeth come together is another red flag. If your bite suddenly feels different or uneven, it may indicate that the joint structure has shifted enough to affect how your teeth meet.

What Happens When Treatment Is Delayed

Early-stage TMD is generally manageable with conservative approaches. These may include oral appliances, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory strategies, and targeted adjustments to habits that strain the joint. When the condition is allowed to progress, the options narrow and the stakes rise.

Disc displacement that goes untreated can develop into a locked jaw, a situation where the mouth cannot open fully without significant pain. Chronic inflammation in the joint leads to degenerative changes in the cartilage and bone, a process similar to arthritis in any other joint in the body. In more severe cases, surgical intervention becomes necessary, including procedures like arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, or open joint surgery. These are outcomes that most patients could have avoided with earlier evaluation and care. Our approach at Drs. Chin & Pharar Dentistry reflects our belief in the hospital-style model of care, where we collaborate on complex cases to make sure nothing is overlooked and every patient receives a thorough, coordinated evaluation.

Why a Dental Evaluation Matters

TMD does not always look the same from one patient to the next. Because symptoms overlap with so many other conditions, getting a proper diagnosis requires a provider who takes the full picture into account, from your dental history to your medical background to your daily habits. We take extra time with each patient because we know that rushing an evaluation leads to missed connections.

Whether you have been living with jaw discomfort for years or recently noticed a new clicking sound, a conversation with our team is a reasonable next step. Dr. Robert Chin and Dr. Jessica Pharar both trained through residency programs that emphasized advanced medical management, giving them a strong foundation for handling cases that go beyond routine dental care.
