Dental erosion also referred to as acid wear, is a common condition in which the teeth experience surface loss. Acidic foods and beverages, or acids from the stomach are typically the cause of this loss. Since erosion isn’t easy to detect early on, it’s important to maintain regular dental check-ups for early detection and treatment. If you have fallen behind on your visits, contact Drs. Erosion of dental enamel causes sensitivity to hot and cold foods/beverages, resulting in dental pain. In a study that was recently published by the Journal of Public Health Dentistry, it was shown that a large share of the adult population had some form of dental erosion. The study also pointed out that the most severe cases were found in those individuals who consumed fruit juices and sugary soft drinks often.

Sodas and juice are not only acidic but also contain large amounts of sugar and are often consumed in portions that are larger than the recommended amount. Dental erosion does not always require treatment, but severe cases can lead to the loss of tooth structure which can be a costly treatment.

Additionally, the sugar content in these beverages also leads to other issues such as dental decay. Water and milk have been found to be the best choices for both overall health and oral health. The study has been found that those participants with lower levels of erosion drank milk more regularly than soda or fruit juice.
